The NASCAR Nextel Cup Series hosted pole qualifying Thursday evening at the flat one-mile Phoenix ( Ariz. ) International Raceway. Teams pulled to the West Coast for the third time this season as they prepare for Saturday night's Subway Fresh 500. Petty Enterprises is looking for their best performance west of the Mississippi this weekend.

Bobby Labonte and the #43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge team had a strong effort during the qualifying day. The team posted the eighth fastest practice time during the afternoon, but qualified early in the session. The track was under a hot desert sun, but Labonte still posted a time one-tenth faster than his practice time. The equalizer, however, the track conditions much cooler for teams that qualified later in the session. Labonte still qualified 21 st .

“I like our Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge,” said Labonte. “It was fast in practice. I wish we could have qualified a little better, but we'll take it and go from here.”
