Bobby Labonte and the #43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge team continued recent strong qualifying runs. Labonte paced all teams in practice by posting the fastest lap at the end of the session. Labonte was the 10th car to qualify and the track was a bit slower. Labonte qualified 13th for Sunday’s race and continues to have a strong car early in Saturday’s practice session.
“We had a pretty good lap there in our Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge,” said Labonte. “We lost a little bit from our quicker lap, but the track slows down sometimes. It seemed like going slower to go faster was the way to go today. We had a shot at the pole, but the motor didn’t feel right and the brakes were a little soft. I’m not sure why, and I’m not saying that was it, but it just didn’t feel right to start with. It should have been faster than that. We stayed on the same tires throughout practice and then we made just one qualifying run. I like to road race when the car is good, and it’s good now. I feel good about it. It might be a good idea to watch that 43 Dodge on Sunday.”
Jamie McMurray showed his strength of taking right hand turns on Friday. McMurray won the pole for Sunday’s Save Mart 350 at the 1.99-mile Infinieon Raceway road course located in Sonoma, California. This is the Nextel Cup Series first of two visits to a road course this season. McMurray beat road coarse star Robby Gordon for the pole. Dale Earnhardt Jr. had a good qualifying run and beat another road course ace, Boris Said, to qualify third. Tony Stewart qualified fifth.
The day was highlighted by the ‘sitting’ of the Hendrick Motorsports team cars of Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. Their cars were found to have illegal modifications to the front of their cars. They did not practice or qualify on Friday, but both cars were practicing Saturday morning at Infineon. They will start in the back of the field for Sunday’s race.
Kyle Petty, running in the Wells Fargo colors put a on good qualifying show Friday. Petty, always a threat at any road course in any type of car, qualified 23rd for Sunday’s race. Petty will continue his role as an analyst for TNT this weekend, but will also compete in his 799th career Nextel Cup race. Petty will provide commentary during caution periods in Sunday’s race.
“Our car was good,” said Petty. “We made some big improvements from practice and we ran about the same. Nobody is going to pick up a lot. I’m happy with it. Our stuff has gotten better and better. The Dodge Avenger program has gotten better and better. This is a good short track package. We struggled at place like Martinsville, so hopefully we’ll be better. Bobby’s car is really good. They went to VIR three times. I talk to myself when I drive. I’ll key the mike. It was just like out there in practice. We got over here and there was about three cars in the same place at the same time. I keyed the mike and I said, ‘boys and girls, there was a wreck, but nobody’s coming out on a wrecker right now. I do that stuff all the time. We’re not going to do a lot of green flag stuff on TNT. It’s mostly going to be under caution. It’s start No. 799 on Sunday. I just turned 47, and I don’t think I’ll make it to 1,000.”
Friday’s qualifying session was televised live nationally by SPEED Channel and broadcast on PRN Radio. Sunday’s race will be televised live on TNT and broadcast live on PRN Radio. The race is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. (ET). |
