Bobby Labonte and the #43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge qualified 10th for Saturday night's 400-lap race at the .075-mile Richmond (Va.) International Raceway. Labonte is sporting a special paint scheme in honor of the event.
“We qualified so early, but man, the guys have been working hard,” said Labonte. “We like that. It wasn’t bad. We stayed up there for a while, but the track got cooler and it dropped us down. We’re ready for the race. We have a good starting spot to work from.”
Jeff Gordon led the field to the green the last time the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series visited Richmond, but for Saturday’s night’s Richmond 400 Gordon will start second. His teammate, Jimmie Johnson won the pole by running the fastest time very early in the qualifying session. Johnson sat on the pole the entire session and held off the challenge from Gordon who qualified near the end.
Kyle Busch qualified third to make it three Hendrick Chevrolet teams to qualify in the top three. Ryan Newman qualified fourth and Virginia native Denny Hamlin was fifth fastest. Jeff Burton was able to qualify with the AT&T colors after an agreement was made out of court by all parties to allow the companies colors fly on the #31 RCR Chevrolet through 2008. Burton qualified 11th. He will start behind Bobby Labonte.
Kyle Petty and the #43 Marathon Dodge team put in the 30th fastest speed on Friday after also qualifying early in the session. The team picked up speed during qualifying and put in their fastest time of the day in qualifying. Petty moved up from where the team was in practice and that makes Petty feel good about Saturday night.
“Oh yea, that’s better,” said Petty. “This is an impound deal and we just roll into the race now. We were a lot better there than what we have been. That was a big improvement in the sun. We think the car will be good at night. The track will be faster and we’ve already made some pretty big improvements.”
Friday’s qualifying session was televised live nationally by ESPN2 and broadcast on MRN Radio. Saturday night’s race will be televised live on ABC and broadcast live on MRN Radio. The race is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. (ET). |
