DOVER, DE (September 21, 2007) - Bobby Labonte and the #43 Cheerios/Betty Crocker Dodge team continue their superb qualifying efforts at Dover as they qualified eighth for the race. They qualified third for the “spring” race at the track this year. Labonte, who is also competing in Saturday’s NASCAR Busch Series race, had a fast car all morning. Crew chief Doug Randolph worked on getting Labonte more overall grip. Once more rubber was laid on the concrete surface, the grip picked up significantly.
“It’s great when you can unload with a competitive setup,” said Labonte. “Doug continues to give me awesome cars. With the race track being as ‘green’ as it was you were kind of sliding around. Not loose, just without grip. All of the practice sessions helped put rubber into the track. That was all it needed.”
Kyle Petty and the #45 Wells Fargo Dodge qualified 16th for Sunday’s race. This is Petty’s best qualifying effort since he started 14th in the “fall” Martinsville race last year. Like Labonte, Petty could be found near the top of the speed charts all day. While most of the cars laid down their quickest time on their first qualifying lap, Petty actually picked up on the second one.
“This was a team effort today,” sounded Petty. “We have a really good car for Sunday and that is a result of everyone here doing a great job today. I love racing at Dover. It’s hard to get lucky here so everyone on this team should feel good, but we have more work to do. We need a good race to stay in the thick of the owner points battle and this gives us a head start on doing that.”
Jimmie Johnson will roll off from the pole position for Sunday’s Dodge Dealers 400 at the Dover (Del.) International Speedway. Johnson is the point leader heading into the second race in the “Chase for the Championship.” Juan Pablo Montoya will start second for the event.
Friday’s qualifying session was televised live nationally by SPEED Channel and broadcast on MRN Radio. Sunday’s race will be televised live on ABC and broadcast live on MRN Radio. The race is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. (EST). |
