TALLADEGA, AL (October6, 2007) - Bobby Labonte and the #43 Pillsbury Dodge team posted the fastest lap among top-35 teams in qualifying for Sunday's 500-mile race at Talladega Superspeedway. Unfortunately, the teams that had to qualify on time were in qualifying trim and that made a difference. Labonte will start 8th.

Bobby Labonte and the #43 Pillsbury Dodge team were 22nd in the first draft practice on Friday. They turned around and were 33rd in the final practice, but the team knows the car is capable of drafting to the front. Labonte’s qualifying lap was the best in class on Friday. Labonte turned in the fastest time of all cars that did not have to qualify into Sunday’s race by time. The cars that did have to qualify for the race by time were in qualifying trim, thus Labonte’s time was actually a pole time compared to the others.

“That was a good lap and the car feels good,” said Labonte. “It says a lot about our cars and about the engine program. We were pretty strong. The car was great out there and we know it’s a good piece.”

Michael Waltrip won the pole leading a trio of Toyota teams outside the top 35 in owner points.

Kyle Petty and the #45 Marathon American Spirit Motor Oil Dodge team put up one of their best qualifying efforts on Saturday. Petty posted a lap of 51.256 seconds. The time was the 18th fastest of the day but will start 12th due to all of the top qualifiers having to qualify on time. Petty and the team were also impressive on Friday during draft practice. Petty was fifth fastest at the end of the first practice session. The team was 35th at the end of the second practice session after trying some different setups to the car. Saturday’s qualifying effort was their best of the season and was the fifth fastest of cars not in qualifying trim.

“This says a lot about our Car of Tomorrow program and the Evernham Engines,” said Petty. “We know the car drafted well, we saw that on Friday, now this shows that it’s a strong car by itself too. The guys have done a good job this weekend and Petty Enterprises had a good day.”

Saturday’s qualifying session was televised live nationally by SPEED Channel and broadcast on MRN Radio. Sunday’s race will be televised live on ABC and broadcast live on MRN Radio. The race is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. (ET).
