The NASCAR Nextel Cup Series traveled to the .526-mile Martinsville (Va.) Speedway for the sixth race in the championship chase. Qualifying and practice were held Friday although rain showers put a kink in both. The storm caused changes in the schedule as practice was shortened and qualifying delayed. Despite the obstacles, current points leader Jeff Gordon won the pole and will start from the front of the pack in Sunday’s Subway 500. It is Gordon’s seventh pole of the season, third consecutive and seventh at Martinsville Speedway.

Bobby Labonte and the #43 Goody’s Headache Powders Dodge team didn’t suffer from the lack of practice on Friday. Labonte turned in the 16th fastest lap of the day. Despite having a shortened practice time the team managed to put together a stable car for Labonte’s qualifying effort. Labonte will start 16th on Sunday.

“It wasn’t bad,” said Labonte. “The car was a little tight in the center of the turns, but I think our car is going to race well. We’ve had good runs here at Martinsville in the past. I think we did ok considering the circumstances.”

Kyle Petty and the #45 Marathon American Spirit Motor Oil Dodge team will start 42nd in Sunday’s 500-lap race. Petty qualified late in the day amid changing weather and track conditions. The team improved throughout the day and turned their fastest lap during qualifying. Sunday’s start is a milestone for Petty. He will be making his 809th career start which will place him fifth on NASCAR’s all-time start list.

“The car was a little tight but I think everybody was a little tight today,” said Petty. “I know Billy and the guys will be working on the car. We still have a few practice sessions to get ready for Sunday.”

Friday’s qualifying session was televised live nationally by ESPN2 and broadcast on MRN Radio. Sunday’s race will be televised live on ABC and broadcast live on MRN Radio. The race is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. (ET).
