37. Kyle Petty, Dodge, 28.518 seconds, 189.354 miles per hour
Bobby Labonte is behind the wheel of the #43 Cheerios Spoonfuls of Stories Dodge this weekend to call attention to the importance of reading. The car was one of the top 20 fastest cars in practice on Friday. They qualified early, but Labonte put in his best lap of the day. He will start 13th in Sunday’s race.
“It was just tight,” said Labonte. “We qualified early and you have to make so many educational guesses to get the best setup with the temperatures like they were. We didn’t have the luck of a later draw so we had to do the best under these conditions. The car isn’t bad and hopefully we can show that on Sunday.”
The 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup season is beginning its final act. Teams and drivers headed into the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway to prepare for Sunday’s last 500-mile race of the season. Only two more races are left before a champion is crowned. Heading into Sunday’s race Jeff Gordon leads Jimmie Johnson by less than 10 points.
Teams competed in a two-lap qualifying session on Friday to determine Sunday’s lineup. The session was run late in the afternoon with the sun setting, and as it did, the speeds became faster for those on the cooler track. Martin Truex Jr. won the pole after qualifying later in the session. He took the top position over the pole winner in April at Texas, Jeff Gordon. A.J. Allmendinger was fast all day on Friday and turned in the fifth fastest time during qualifying. He’s the top qualifying rookie.
Kyle Petty and the #45 National Tire and Battery Dodge team will start Sunday’s event from the 37h position. Crew chief Bill Wilburn and the crew made slight changes to the car during practice. They feel they will have a good piece when the green flag drops on Sunday.
Petty has been solid on the 1.5-mile, intermediate tracks during the 2007 season. His 13th place finish at the Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway last weekend gives the team loads of confidence as they continue to gain ground in the owner point standings.
“The best the car felt all day was on the qualifying lap,” said Petty. “I mean, it stuck really well. I had to apologize to my guys after the lap because I know I left a few tenths out there on the track. But hey, the guys did great. Sunday should be another good day for us.”
Friday’s qualifying session was televised live nationally by ESPN2 and broadcast on PRN Radio. Sunday’s race will be televised live on ABC and broadcast live on PRN Radio. The race is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. (ET). |
