Bobby Labonte - Summer Stretch

Summer Stretch

Huntersville, N.C. (May 28, 2008) – This weekend begins the first of seven weeks of consecutive racing for competitors on the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit. Teams will have one weekend off in July before another stretch of consecutive races close the season. This first summer stretch is tough on drivers and race teams alike. Racing each weekend is a mental and physical test. Bobby Labonte gives his thoughts on the stress and benefits of the summer stretch:

“The summer stretch is by far the hardest time of the season, wear-and-tear wise on teams and cars. Some guys like using one car for a lot of different tracks. If you have problems with that car, guys need to work in high gear to get that car prepared for its next race. At the same time, you’re still preparing these new cars too– getting ready to practice and race four days later each week.”

“The summer stretch is a test of ability and stamina- which teams are able to pull through hard times better than others, resources or no resources. It’s not easy, but you have to dig in and do it. Everyone is in the same boat. It can be extremely rewarding if you’re running well. It’s just another challenge and I like taking them on.”
