Trouble Under the Hood Ruins the Day for Labonte and No. 96 DLP Ford Fusion Team
Bobby Labonte and the No. 96 DLP team posted a 43rd-place finish in Sunday's Carfax 400 at Michigan International Speedway after a parts failure under the hood sent them to the garage just after lap eight. Though the DLP team was able to mend the No. 96 enough for Labonte to return to the track on lap 28, by lap 40 the DLP Ford was again in the garage. The issues under the hood were terminal and the day was over for team 96.
"Something broke in the valve train area," said Labonte after exiting his Ford. "It (the engine) didnít sound good to start with, so something happened to it between yesterday and today. The problem was getting worse, so we parked it - there's no sense in messing it up."
Brian Vickers outlasted Jimmie Johnson in yet another fuel-mileage duel at Michigan, taking the lead with two laps to go after Johnson ran out of gas and holding on to win his first Sprint Cup race of the season Sunday. Jeff Gordon finished second, followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Carl Edwards and Sam Hornish Jr. completed the top five.
